Erwin Schulhoff wurde in den Zwanzigerjahren des letzten Jahrhunderts berühmt mit jazzigen Klavierkompositionen und Dadaistischer Musik.

Er wurde 1894 in Prag als Sohn eines Baumwollhändlers geboren. Seine Mutter plante für ihn eine Karriere als klavierspielendes Wunderkind nach dem Vorbild seines berühmten Onkels, des Pianisten Julius Schulhoff. 1901 wurde er Dvorak vorgestellt, der  - nach erfolgreicher Prüfung in Gehörbildung - den Siebenjährigen mit Schokolade belohnte: "So promovierte mich Dvorak zum Musikanten". Er studierte Klavierspiel, Komposition und Dirigieren in Prag, Wien  und Köln. 1942 wurde er wegen jüdischer Abstammung im Konzentrationslager Wülzburg ermordet.

Sein Duo für Geige und Cello ist eingängig und musikantisch, aber keineswegs banal. Es tönt wegen Verwendung von Doppelgriffen in beiden Instrumenten teils fast wie ein Streichquartett.

 

Erwin Schulhoff became famous in the 1920s by jazz-inspired piano-music and Dadaist compositions.

He was born in Prague in 1894 as the son of a cotton merchant. His mother planned a career as a piano-playing prodigy, after the example of his famous uncle, the pianist Julius Schulhoff. 1901 Erwin was introduced to Dvorak who - after having examined his musical ear training - rewarded him with chocolate: "This is how Dvorak promoted me to the rank of a musician". He studied the piano, composition and conducting in Prague, Vienna, Leipzig and Köln. 1942 he was murdered in the Wülzburg concentration camp because of Jewish descent.

His duo for violin and cello is easy to the ears and highly musical. Due to double stops in violin and cello it sounds partly like a string quatuor.
